What is an SGPA to Percentage Calculator?

Simply put, a calculator computes a particular value after mathematical operations. Similarly, an SGPA to percentage calculator is an instrument or a specially designed calculator that computes the SGPA grade points to percentage values. Such conversions are commonly applied in the education sector.

What is SGPA?

The acronym SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average. This parameter of grading is employed by colleges to provide the grading of student performance for a semester. SGPA is utilized by colleges or institutions most but not by all. Therefore, a converter calculator for these SGPA points into percentages is always required or requested by students.

Elements of SGPA

For handling SGPA, you need to know some of the fundamental components such as Semesters, Grade Points, & Credit Points.

  • Semester: The semester is of 6 months and academic years are usually divided into semesters for better & detailed learning of the course.
  • Grade Point: These points are indicative of the performance of students in a particular subject studied during the course. These points are in direct proportion to the students’ knowledge in that subject.
  • Credit Points: These points are indicative of the commitment of students to a specific subject in terms of hours. Each student must invest a certain time frame on each subject of the semester to acquire qualifying credit points.

How to Calculate SGPA?

Each subject result of a course is generally made available in the form of credit points. Credit points need to be first determined by students in order to get their SGPA for a given semester before these are converted to percentages.

These are some basic steps that could be followed in order to arrive at SGPA value for a semester.

  • Step 1: Note down all the credit points for various subjects as described in your performance sheet.
  • Step 2: Multiply each subject’s credit point with its grade point.
  • Step 3: Now, sum up the outcome of these multiplications for all the subjects.
  • Step 4: Sum up all the credit points for all the subjects.
  • Step 5: Divide the outcome of Step 3 by Step 4.
  • Step 6: The result obtained will be treated as your SGPA for the semester.

Example of SGPA Calculation

Example 1:

Subject Credit Point Grade
Subject P 3 9
Subject Q 2 8
Subject R 3 8
Subject S 2 7
  1. Step 1: 3, 2, 3, 2
  2. Step 2: 3 x 9 = 27, 2 x 8 = 16, 3 x 8 = 24, 2 x 7 = 14
  3. Step 3: 27 + 16 + 24 + 14 = 81
  4. Step 4: 3 + 2 + 3 + 2 = 10
  5. Step 5: 81/10 = 8.1
  6. Step 6: SGPA = 8.1
Subject Credit Point Grade
Subject I 4 8
Subject II 3 8
Subject III 3 9
Subject IV 2 7
Subject V 3 8
Subject VI 2 7
  1. Step 1: 4, 3, 3, 2, 3, 2
  2. Step 2: 4 x 8 = 32, 3 x 8 = 24, 3 x 9 = 27, 2 x 7 = 14, 3 x 8 = 24, 2 x 7 = 14
  3. Step 3: 32 + 24 + 27 + 14 + 24 + 14 = 135
  4. Step 4: 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 2 = 17
  5. Step 5: 135/17 = 7.94
  6. Step 6: SGPA = 7.94

Formula to Calculate SGPA from Grade Points & Credit Points.

The steps discussed above to find the SGPA point from the grade points of every subject of a semester can be expressed by using a formula as described below.

SGPA (Si) = Σ (Ci x Gi) / Σ Ci

In this equation, Si is the SGPA for the ith semester, Ci is the credit point of every subject in the ith semester, and Gi is the grade point of every subject in the ith semester.

Formula to Convert/Calculate SGPA into Percentage

The equation utilized to obtain percentage values based on SGPA points is given below.

Percentage = (SGPA x 10) – 7.5

The formula mentioned above can be broken down into two steps for easy calculation:

Step 1: SGPA x 10

Step 2: (SGPA x 10) – 7.5

How to Convert SGPA to Percentage?

In order to obtain the overall result of your qualifying course in percentage, you need to first calculate the SGPA of all the semesters using the above-stated points. Add the SGPA points of all the semesters to obtain the overall SGPA point.

Once you have the total SGPA value, plug it into the SGPA to percentage conversion formula and arrive at your performance grade in percentage value.

Example of SGPA to Percentage Calculation

For better clarity of the students, they can refer to the examples given here.

Example 1: SGPA = 8.1
  • Step 1: SGPA x 10 = 8.1 x 10 = 81
  • Step 2: (SGPA x 10) – 7.5 = 81 – 7.5 = 73.5%
Example 2: SGPA = 7.94
  • Step 1: SGPA x 10 = 7.94 x 10 = 79.4
  • Step 2: (SGPA x 10) – 7.5 = 79.4 – 7.5 = 71.9%

Letter Grades Approved by UGC

According to the UGC guidelines, letter grades are also adopted by many institutions or universities that correspond to a specific grade point and range of percentages. The accepted Letter Grades with their respective Grade Points & Percentage range are given below.

Percentage of Marks Letter Grade as per UGC Guideleines Grade Points
90-100% O (Outstanding) 10
80-90% A+ (Excellent) 9
70-80% A (Very Good) 8
60-70% B+ (Good) 7
50-60% B (Average) 6
40-50% C (Pass) 5
Below 40% F (Fail) 0
Absent AB 0

Difference Between SGPA and CGPA

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average and it indicates how well a student has performed in an academic year. Whereas SGPA is the semester performance grade. CGPA can be derived from SGPA by summing up all the SGPA values of individual semesters and then dividing that by the total number of semesters.

For example, if the SGPA of a student in his 1st and 2nd semester is 6 and 8, respectively, then the CGPA will be calculated as:

CGPA  = (SGPA of Semester 1 + SGPA of Semester 2)/(Sum of Semesters)

= (6 + 8)/(1+1)

= 14/2

= 7

Another difference between CGPA and SGPA is that CGPA is used as a performance grade method at the school levels while SGPA is used in higher studies.
